FAQ

1. Why Srinagar ?

Srinagar is the summer capital of Kashmir, but beyond this mere single geographical administrative imperative, Srinagar city is an ancient city which is pregnant with history, ecology, philosophy, poetry, music, commerce, theater, anthropology, architecture, a particular politics and modernity.

2. Why Biennale ?

All the 200 odd Biennales since last 1895 AD are different from each other, and why not one more besides Kochi Biennale. Lahore is doing one, so are we. We desire a genuine city to city connect at global level ; thought to thought, life to life as art to art.

3. Where is it happening ?

In all the cities of the world where Srinagar Biennale NODE (s) exist. Srinagar is just another city with one Node.

4. What is Node ?

A Node is usually represented by a Nodal person/s with a proper address. A city can have one or more than one Node, with different city name or organizational name. Any body with curatorial intent is ideally fit to apply for Node through our web site, or write a simple mail to srinagarbiennle@gmail.com. A Node is almost an autonomous body with a veritable connect to us.

Symbiotically, people can imagine interfaces between participants from different disciplines, and develop their projects in their own singular fashion.

7. Will you invite a participant formally?

Selected artists will receive an invitation letter by email.

8. How to articulate simply the philosophy of Srinagar Biennale ?

Our times are increasingly becoming more porous, which means that categories are dissolving at edges, and once we realize the chaotic nature of our fields, we begin to search for vital elements in our life. Art is a faculty which has traditionally facilitated human mind to experiment with myriad forms and conflicting thoughts and get rid of purposeless back loads inherited from past. We cherish the fact that forms of expression have multiplied in the present than before, which is an advantage for average person to think art without bothering about errors, or finished products only.

9. What is last date of submission ?

The last date of submission was 30th June, but we are likely to extend the deadlines soon.

10. What is political in Srinagar Biennale ?

One does ‘political’ if ‘ the political’ has gone for a picnic, but in our understanding, we breathe ‘ the political’ without any break. So there is no ‘political’ in Srinagar Biennale in that sense. Yet, our world has produced a huge amount of ‘political’ since decades as Kashmir being “ bone of contention “ between India and Pakistan, with China and Anglo American ‘deep state’ stakes. We consider ourselves as weakest forces to alter the immensity of political intent on ground. But as parallel to that, another arty huge can emerge too from the very molecular state of life which sustains ‘the political’ in its own orbit. Any idea to legitimize the so called representative form of art only, diminishes the very potential of that art form. Art is neither free from politics nor subservient to explicit tendencies of meaning oriented expressions only.

11. What will happen after the srinagar biennale takes place?

After the biennale takes place, the SB team will keep working with the residue of the event to formulate, realize and imagine newer events, movements and flows, all of which can be a continuation of the biennale itself. By such movements we aim to challenge the structure of biennale so to revisit, revise or possibly rethink the idea of a biennale.
